MC RiderRide Summary
This 24-kilometre-long ride has a corner ratio of 80% and fair corner speeds. Cars are fairly frequent, with a rate of one every 5 minutes being typical. The bitumen grip is good and there are no bumps in the smooth road surface.
Ride Description
This ride is another of several exciting routes through the Otway Ranges, near the Tasman Sea. The scenery along the route is not as inspiring as that along Skenes Creek Road, but the excellence of the bitumen and the lack of glossy corners makes up for that somewhat. The terrain is heavily forested and grown with ferns as well. It is known as a local version of the Reefton Spur because of its mix of sporadic straightaways for blasting, and numerous interesting twisting, convoluted sections.
Directions
The town of Torquay, the actual start of the Great Ocean Road, is 85 kilometres southwest of Melbourne’s CBD, and can be reached by first crossing the West Gate Bridge and following the Princes Highway. Continue on this highway through Geelong, then turn off onto the Surf Coast Highway, which leads directly to Torquay. From Torquay it is a short ride to Lorne.

Best Thing About This Ride
The twisting areas of this ride, which give you lots of entertaining corner work, are the best features of the Lorne to Deans Marsh ride.
What Else To Look Out For
There is nothing out of the ordinary to watch out for on this ride.
It is my favourite local ride. Much less traffic than the GOR. Early morning or weekdays and there are few cars. I was prompted to make a comment because reading the discription made it sound like a safe easy ride. First the road can be off camber with tightening bends. There are some corragations near sharp bends that will affect grip. Most noticably the surface is prone to leaf litter build up, dampness and moss growing on the road surface. There are some nice straights and the bends are plentiful. Entering or leaving Lorne be aware of Tourist traffic and towards Deans Marsh there are farms so you might meet tractors etc. There are also camping sites and the turnoff to “The Falls” rock concert was about half way along the road this year.
It is a beatiful ride through the forest, but please be careful 🙂
As a bonus there is the Martian Cafe at Deans Marsh. Plenty of bikes pull up for a chat.
