Ride Summary

This ride is 34 kilometres long based in the Mornington Peninsular of Victoria.

Ride Description

Reached by a complex route through some roads that have some interesting twists and turns of their own, Arthur’s Seat is a hill that can be ridden up and down at speed, which is known as “doing the Seat.” You are advised to visit this ride during the week, which will lessen both the chance of meeting tourist cars and of attracting the attention of the Traffic Operations Group.

Drive to the summit of Arthur’s Seat, then drive slowly down its front, noting all of the features along the road – observing where the corners are and how sharp they are, and whether they are contaminated with either loose gravel or oil. Once you are familiar with the route and the current conditions on the corners, you can return to the summit and “do the Seat” much faster several times, enjoying speeding around the curves on this exciting downslope run.

Directions

Reaching Arthur’s Seat involves starting off along the road to Flinders which passes through Cape Schanck. This road is straight and fringed by market gardens, but you should be cautious near the cross roads. Pass by the Cape Schanck turnoff, unless you want to stop at the lighthouse, and follow the now interestingly twisty road towards Flinders. There is some very twisty roadway along cliffs that front on Bass Strait where caution is advised despite the good view.

Drive through Flinders and continue on towards Balnarring. You have the option of taking the Red Hill turnoff at Shoreham, or going on until you are nearly in Balnarring and then turning off towards Red Hill on a second road that leads to that place.

Best Thing About This Ride

“Doing the Seat” is the best thing about this ride, and indeed is the entire point of driving out to Arthur’s Seat in the first place.

What Else To Look Out For

You should keep a sharp eye out for gravel on the corners, or any oil as well, during your “scouting trip” along the Arthur’s Seat descent. Keeping a watch for the Traffic Operations Group is also prudent.
